‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ keeps top box office spot in second weekend

LOS ANGELES – “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” remains the most popular movie in North America, grossing $51.6 million in its second weekend in theaters, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Director Tim Burton’s comedy/horror film is a sequel to his 1988 “Beetlejuice.” Both films star Michael Keaton as a ghost trying to marry someone in the real world and Winona Ryder as his love interest.

“Speak No Evil,” the remake of a 2022 Danish horror film, opened with $11.5 million for second place, Comscore reported.

nabbed third place with another $5.2 million Friday through Sunday in its eighth weekend in theaters.

“Am I Racist?” — a “Borat”-style prank film featuring author and conservative political activist Matt Walsh — opened with $4.7 million in limited release for fourth place.

“Reagan,” a biopic of the nation’s 40th president starring Dennis Quaid, was fifth with $2.9 million in its third week.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases at North American theaters were “The Killer’s Game” ($2.6 million), “Alien: Romulus” ($2.4 million), “It Ends with Us” ($2.02 million), “The Forge” ($2.01 million) and “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust” ($1.4 million).

This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $95 million. The year-to-date total is $6.077 billion — down 12% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore. (CNS)
