What began as a dream turned into an extraordinary milestone for a Filipino student, proving that big aspirations can take flight from even the smallest of places.
She is Atasha Faye T. Maggay hailing from Penablanca, Cagayan, who was still a Grade 12 student when she joined the program.
She was one of 15 Filipino students selected to participate in a 12-day intensive training on space science and technology under the NASA
The training, held from May 17 to 28, immersed participants in hands-on challenges designed to test their skills, creativity and innovation in the field of space exploration.
Maggay proved to be a standout among the multinational participants. She earned a silver medal at the NASA Space Center University and dominated the Martian Habitat Challenge as well as the Robotics and Cryogenic Challenge, both of which she won first place.
She also took second place in the Lunar Habitat Challenge at the University of Houston and the Rocketry and Endothermic Challenge, plus a third-place finish in the Coding Challenge.
According to HASSE Space School, its training approach “plunges you into the world of space exploration” through interactive and hands-on learning.
The program emphasizes sparking curiosity and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit by connecting students with NASA scientists, academic experts and leaders from prominent aerospace companies who share insights drawn from their own professional experiences.
Now a freshman taking up Legal Management at the University of Santo Tomas’ Faculty of Arts and Letters, Maggay carries with her not only the awards but also the confidence and vision gained from the experience.
More than her academic and space science achievements, Maggay was also a member of the UST Senior High School Women’s Basketball Goodwill Team.
