SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Nintendo has announced the official title of the sequel to Universal’s record-breaking “Super Mario Bros. Movie”: “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.”

The animated movie – set for worldwide release beginning April 3, 2026 – takes its title from Nintendo’s hit video game, “Super Mario Galaxy.”

The announcement was made Friday ahead of the 40th anniversary of the original “Super Mario Bros.” video game on Sept. 13, 1985.

In addition, Nintendo and Illumination announced that the returning voice actors for the characters will be Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek).

The additional characters and voice cast for the movie will be announced at a later date.

The film will be released on April 3, 2026 in the US and many additional markets globally, and will be released on April 24, 2026 in Japan, with select territories releasing throughout the month of April.

About ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’

The “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros., and follows “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which was released in 2023 and earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide.

Both the 2023 film and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” are produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo.

The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, and will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures.

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, from a screenplay by returning screenwriter Matthew Fogel, with Brian Tyler returning to compose the score.

Illumination, founded by Chris Meledandri in 2007, is one of the entertainment industry’s leading producers of event-animated films, including “Despicable Me” – the most successful animated franchise in cinematic history – as well as the record-breaking “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” and “The Grinch.”
