For Romanian tennis veteran Sorana Cirstea, her stay in New York during the US Open took an unexpected turn when an item that represents one of her most recent career milestones suddenly went missing.
Tennis ace Sorana Cirstea has found herself in an unexpected off-court battle as the athlete revealed that a trophy she recently earned was stolen from her hotel room, prompting her to make a public appeal for its return.
Cirstea took to Instagram two days after her exit from singles competition at Flushing Meadows to share her frustration. The missing item, she said, was the trophy she received for winning the Tennis in the Land tournament in Cleveland.
“Whoever stole my Cleveland trophy from room 314 at The Fifty Sonesta please give it back!” Cirstea wrote on her Instagram story. She stressed that the prize held no financial significance, explaining, “It has NO material value, just sentimental value. It would be (greatly) appreciated!”

Her words sparked a wave of responses. Tournament organizers reposted her story with reassurance: “We can’t let you go home without any hardware! … We will make it right,” they wrote, signaling their intention to provide her with a replacement.
The Fifty Sonesta Hotel, through General Manager Simon Chapman, acknowledged the report and emphasized that the matter is being handled seriously. According to Chapman, their director of safety and security, a retired NYPD detective, is personally leading the investigation.
While tennis trophies often sparkle on shelves as physical proof of victory, Cirstea’s stolen prize underscores how deeply symbolic such awards can be. For her, the Cleveland trophy represented not just a win but also resilience and longevity in a demanding sport.
Cirstea defeated Alex Eala at the Mutua Madrid Open last year.
