Filipino American rapper Ruby Ibarra continues to make waves in both music and culture, recently earning recognition from the Los Angeles City Council on Filipino American History Month for her outstanding contributions to the community and the arts.

The honor was shared by Councilmember for District 14 Ysabel Jurado, who took to Instagram to celebrate the moment.

“Last week, we honored an artist whose work transcends borders, languages and generations – the incomparable [Ruby Ibarra],” Jurado wrote, commending the rapper for transforming her identity into a form of art and activism.

Born in Tacloban, Leyte, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ibarra has long been celebrated for her ability to weave Filipino identity, language and heritage into her music.

Ibarra’s voice, Jurado noted, uplifts “women, immigrants, and workers – those who’ve had to fight to be seen and heard.” Her choice to perform in English, Tagalog and Waray is a reminder that every part of Filipino identity deserves to shine.

“Ruby, thank you for your courage, creativity, and for carrying our stories with pride and fire,” Jurado added.

Further cementing her influence, Ibarra also won NPR’s 2025 Tiny Desk Contest, a major milestone in her career. Outshining nearly 7,500 hopefuls, her electrifying live performance of “Bakunawa” resonated deeply with audiences and stirred powerful discussions online.
