The momentum keeps building for Filipino Canadian pop-punk act MICO, who has just ticked off a defining moment in his young career after stepping onto the stage of Canada’s premier music awards.

Introducing his sound to a nationwide audience at the Juno Awards 2026, the rising singer-songwriter delivered a milestone performance of his track “HOMESICK.”

Held on March 29 at the TD Coliseum in Hamilton, the ceremony honored the best of Canadian music from the past year and further cemented its reputation as the country’s equivalent to the Grammy Awards.

This year’s show was hosted by comedian Mae Martin, marking a rare return of a comedian host since Russell Peters last took on the role in 2017.

Beyond the performance, MICO’s presence at the event carried even more weight. The artist was officially nominated for Breakthrough Artist or Group of the Year.

Marking the milestone, MICO shared a candid message on Instagram: “canada’s breakthrough loser 2026,” he opened.

“Ty to [The Juno Awards] for putting my name amongst some of the most promising artists in the world and letting me sing my song [with] some of my best friends in front of the entire country. means a lot to a couple mayfield kids from just outside toronto.”

The post quickly resonated with fans, reflecting the same authenticity that has defined his music from the very beginning.

Long before the Juno Awards spotlight, MICO – born Miguel Veloso – was already carving out his own lane online. He began by uploading songs on SoundCloud and engaging with listeners through Discord, slowly building a tight-knit community that championed his work. That digital-first approach allowed him to grow organically, with fans drawn to both his sound and his sincerity.

His musical identity, however, is deeply rooted in his upbringing. Raised in a Filipino household, he grew up surrounded by OPM, which shaped his early love for melody and storytelling.

As his artistry evolved, he gravitated toward pop-punk, taking cues from bands like Marianas Trench and 5 Seconds of Summer to craft a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
