As anticipation builds for Olivia Rodrigo’s upcoming concert, the Filipino American Grammy-winning artist finds herself at the center of an online fashion debate surrounding her recent babydoll-inspired looks tied to her upcoming third studio album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.”

In recent weeks, Rodrigo has sported floral babydoll dresses, a styling direction that has become closely associated with the rollout of her new era.

The aesthetic appeared prominently in the visuals for her lead single, “Drop Dead,” before gaining even more attention during her Spotify Billions Club performance in Barcelona on May 8.

The criticism largely centered on the combination of babydoll-style dresses and bloomer shorts worn during performances that also included mature lyrics, suggestive choreography and emotionally intense visuals.

Rodrigo’s fans and fashion observers strongly defended the singer, saying much of the so-called criticism ignored the historical roots behind the style she is wearing.

Many pointed out that babydoll dresses have long been connected to alternative fashion movements, particularly the grunge and riot grrrl scenes of the 1990s. Artists such as Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland famously embraced similar silhouettes.

Fashion historians and publications have also noted that the silhouette originally emerged as adult lingerie decades ago before evolving into a mainstream fashion staple.

Beyond the outfits themselves, some users argued that the backlash reflects the heavy scrutiny toward young women in entertainment whenever they embrace overt femininity.

Others claimed the outrage surrounding Rodrigo’s styling felt exaggerated and rooted in double standards rarely applied to male performers.
