The Philippines’ ube is a globally celebrated agricultural product and Bohol is now taking a major step to protect its most prized variety.
The Provincial Government of Bohol has officially filed a Geographical Indication (GI) bid with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) for Ubi Kinampay.

The application aims to protect the “Queen of Philippine Yams” from false origin claims, imitation products and unauthorized commercial use, especially as global demand for ube continues to grow.
According to IPOPHL, the move is part of a broader effort to safeguard local heritage crops while strengthening the Philippines’ position in the booming international “purple food” market.

The application emphasizes the distinct qualities of Ubi Kinampay, including its naturally vibrant violet flesh, sweet earthy aroma and rich, complex flavor. These characteristics are not accidental but are deeply connected to Bohol’s fertile soil, tropical climate and generations of traditional farming practices.

If granted, GI status would not only protect the name “Ubi Kinampay” but also ensure that only produce grown and harvested in Bohol can legally carry its identity. This is expected to help prevent counterfeit ube products in the market, protect farmers from unfair competition, and support long-term rural livelihoods.

IPOPHL Director General Teodoro C. Pascua described the development as timely, noting the global surge in demand. “The world is now in the middle of a ‘purple gold rush,’ and GI protection can help the Philippines stake its claim in the growing global demand by strengthening its market identity and position,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of cultural preservation in agriculture, adding, “As ube becomes more global, we must make sure the roots of varieties from the country are not lost. GI protection helps ensure that the true heart of the Bohol Ubi Kinampay – its soil, story and people – remain Boholano and Filipino.”
If granted, the Ubi Kinampay will join four other Philippine GIs: Guimaras Mangoes, Aklan Piña, Alburquerque Asin Tibuok and Tau Sebu T’nalak.
