Long before she became one of the world’s biggest pop stars, Blackpink member Lisa made a life-changing decision based on a fortune teller’s advice.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the Thai rapper shared that she legally changed her name from Pranpriya Manobal to Lalisa Manobal when she was just 13 years old.
The decision came shortly after she auditioned for South Korean entertainment company YG Entertainment.
Looking back, Lisa explained that visiting fortune tellers is a common and enjoyable tradition in Thailand.
“I mean, I don’t know about the culture here, but in Thailand, it’s fun to go see a fortune teller,” the pop star said.

After her audition, Lisa and her mother decided to seek guidance about what the future might hold. During the visit, the fortune teller suggested that her birth name, Pranpriya, was not bringing her good fortune and recommended that she change it to something more auspicious.
Although changing her legal name was a major step, Lisa said she was willing to try anything that could help her achieve her dream. “You know what? I’ll do anything.”
She eventually adopted the name Lalisa, which is commonly translated as “one who is praised” or “one who brings praise” in Thai. The name is believed to carry positive energy and symbolize prosperity.
Not long after making the change, Lisa received the news she had been hoping for. YG Entertainment called her back and accepted her into its trainee program.
That opportunity marked the beginning of a journey that would eventually lead to her debut with Blackpink and launch her career on the global stage.
Although Lisa did not say that changing her name alone led to her success, she shared the story as an example of a cultural practice that remains popular in Thailand.
