Filipino Canadian artist MICO is embracing vulnerability like never before with the release of his latest album, a project he has described as his most personal body of work to date.
But while his record, “When the Lights Turn On,” reflects some of the most honest moments of his life, not every song was easy for him to share with the world.
In a recent podcast appearance on Zach Sang Show, MICO admitted that one particular track initially made him nervous because of how directly it expressed his thoughts and emotions.
When asked whether there was a song that stood out after previously mentioning he had been scared to release parts of the album, MICO immediately pointed to a specific track.
“It’s weird because [the track] ‘OH!’ scares me, but it also excites me the most. There’s literally a line in there that’s like, ‘I could block all my fans.’ Like, I don’t know how people are going to feel about that,” he mentioned.

Burnout and the search for escape
The lyrics of “OH!” prompted the podcast hosts to ask what inspired such a bold statement.
Rather than being a literal desire to distance himself from supporters, MICO explained that the line emerged from an emotionally overwhelming period during the album’s creation. He recalled reaching the end of his first songwriting trip feeling mentally exhausted while simultaneously dealing with relationship struggles that weighed heavily on him.
He shared that he was eager to return home to sort through those personal issues and find a healthier path forward.
He explained that the song’s opening verse captured everything racing through his mind at the time, alongside hypothetical scenarios to escape the chaos.
Despite those fantasies, MICO said the song ultimately reflects the realization that changing his surroundings would not erase what he was feeling.
“But then the chorus is just kind of running home to think it’s always just going to feel the same,” he further shared. “It’s kind of going to feel a little monotonous. It’s like no matter what, I’m going to be surrounded by the same feelings, no matter what situation I’m in because of how far I’ve already gotten myself into it.”
