Filipino Canadian artist Mico looks back on the project that helped turn him from an emerging online voice into one of the most talked-about names in the alternative music scene.
The singer-songwriter recently celebrated the second anniversary of “Internet Hometown Hero,” his eight-track project that became a defining moment in his career.
For Mico, who is currently on tour, the milestone marks years of writing, creating and growing alongside the listeners who followed his journey from the beginning.
“2 years of Internet hometown hero. almost 3 since i began writing it. it’s hard to imagine how much time has passed, both because it’s felt like not a lot of it, yet so much of it. my life has changed beyond however much i thought it could from a small collection of 8 songs,” Mico wrote in a reflection shared with fans.

The artist admitted he initially struggled to find the right words for the anniversary after technical issues kept him from sharing his thoughts online right away. Instead, the unexpected break from his phone gave him time to reflect on how much the project had become intertwined with his personal and artistic growth.
Visual concept for the album
Released as a personal collection of songs rooted in youth, identity and emotional honesty, “Internet Hometown Hero” was a project Mico had envisioned since he was 15 years old.
Looking back, Mico said the project captured both some of his most difficult experiences and his most memorable moments, with many of the photos from the anniversary post taken between creating the album and finally releasing it.
“All of these pictures were taken somewhere inbetween making it and having it finally out there for all of you. some of the hardest times of my life, but also some of the highlights. shared with some of my closest friends that have remained with me even after all of it was over,” he added, with the carousel of photos on Instagram.
The artist also revealed a glimpse into the creative process behind the project, sharing that the original visual concept for one of the songs nearly took a different direction.
“Also that passport was the original artwork concept for homesick… originally all of the single artworks were going to be pictures taken of scattered belongings in the room. imagine what world we’d be in without that messy ass suitcase pile,” Mico wrote in the comments.
Two years after “Internet Hometown Hero” introduced him to a wider audience, Mico continues to cherish the connection he has built with fans who have followed his musical journey.
